ABKA run an annual training course for beginners each March.  Courses run over six weeks and cover the following topics:

Class 1 – Natural history of the honeybee
Class 2 – Beekeeping equipment & forage
Class 3 – Colony management
Class 4 – Honeybee health
Class 5 – Swarming and how to control it
Class 6 – Conclusion

In addition, there are practical sessions at our apiary to help beginners develop their confidence an skills in handling the bees. And of course safety is a priority. It is not possible to learn how to handle bees in the classroom, so these sessions are a must!

Our courses are strictly limited to fifteen places due to the teaching space available to us and run on Sunday mornings (10 a.m. to 12 a.m.).

Please note that these courses book up early! We are taking bookings for the 2016 course. To download an application form, please click here.

If you have ever been tempted to try beekeeping then now is the time to have a go. Honeybees are under threat as never before and need all the help they can get. Our six week course is excellent value and could get you beekeeping by the summer!

ABKA has its own teaching apiary and course members may visit it on Saturday afternoons to experience practical beekeeping at first hand. For further information contact the Association Secretary. We also offer “taster” sessions so you can decide if beekeeping is for you.
